Jamie Carragher: Missing out on Europe will help Liverpool qualify for Champions League

Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher believes that the absence of European football at Anfield next season could help the club’s push for a place in the top four.

Carragher, 33, was part of the side beaten in their final two matches of the season by Tottenham and Aston Villa, leaving them in sixth position and outside of the Europa League qualification places.

However, after a dismal start to the season, in which the club took a mere 25 points from 20 matches, a sixth-place finish is reward for a strong finish to the season under club legend Kenny Dalglish, with the side, led by a new strikeforce of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez, looking rejuvenated.

“We would rather have got in the Europa League but it’s not happened and we have to look at the positives,” Carragher told the club’s official website.

“The main thing for us next season is getting back into the Champions League. Not being in Europe will give us a better chance of doing that. We want to get back in the top four and do well in the cups.

“Playing Thursdays and Sundays isn’t ideal so there’s a flip side to not being involved.”
