England international Jay Bothroyd has left Cardiff City after failing to agree terms on a new contract with the club.

Bothroyd and winger Chris Burke had both been offered contracts earlier in the season but both were asking for more money and the club has decided to let them leave.

A club statement read: “Contracts have not been offered to Jay Bothroyd and Chris Burke following an inability for all parties to agree suitable terms.”

Bothroyd became a target for Premier League clubs after playing a starring role in Cardiff’s run to the play-off semi-final and made his debut for England in the friendly defeat to France. The forward, who scored 20 goals for the club this season, has also been linked with a move to Celtic.

Craig Bellamy has returned to Manchester City, although the striker has indicated that he would like to play at Cardiif again next season.

Jason Koumas, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Seyi Olofinjana have also left to return to their parent teams.
