Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney asks Sir Alex Ferguson not to rest him against Blackpool

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney does not want to miss out on playing in the club’s last Premier League game of the season against Blackpool, despite facing Barcelona just six days later in the Champions League final.

The Red Devils have already sealed their 19th league title prior to Sunday’s final fixture, but the England international does not wish to be rested.

He was quoted as saying by The Sun: “It’s down to the manager to pick what team he wants to play in the two matches.

“But I’m sure all the players want to play. You play football to play in these games and I hope I can play Sunday.”

Ahead of the title celebrations, the Liverpudlian emphasised the importance of keeping match fitness by playing in such games.

“You want to keep ticking over,” he continued.

Rooney, 25, also spoke of his pride at lifting a fourth Premier League title since joining United in 2004.

He said: “Lifting the trophy is a great feeling. It’s great to look back on and something to show your kids when they are older.”
