The National Swimming Championship, the biggest event this season, will take place on June 4 and 5 at the Heaven of Peace Academy, Kunduchi.
Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) technical director Marcelino Ngalioma said preparations for the event were in place adding that it would also involve swimmers who are undergoing training abroad.
Ngalioma voiced optimism of obtaining the best athletes for the forthcoming international tournaments. “Everything is going according to the plan, it’s our hope that the championship will be competitive given the preparations of the swimmers,” he said. The director added: “We have some tough international tournaments ahead, so we’ll use this competition to pick the best ones.” The swimmers who are abroad include: Gouri Kotecha (Kenya) Magdalena Moshi (Australia) and Khalid Rushaka (Uganda).
Other leading local swimmers primed for success at the June championship are: Omari Abdallah (Zanzibar), Nasoro Nasoro (Zanzibar), Adam Kitururu (Dar es Salaam) and Hilal Hilal (Dar es Salaam). Meanwhile, the TSA is desperately seeking about Sh15 million that would be used to prepare the national team for the World Swimming Championship planned for Shanghai later this year.
