The Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) yesterday requested President Jakaya Kikwete to build an international-standard swimming pool as his legacy for the swimming fraternity. The call was made by coaches on the closing day of a coaching course organised by the world swimming governing body, Fina.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Ramadhan Namkoveka said the pool should preferably be built at the National Stadium. He said swimming was gaining momentum after the sport in Tanzania received international recognition in 2006 following the election of new leaders in 2005.

“We now have 45 coaches, six among them are in Level One and can coach in any country due to their qualifications…we are still going up and today (yesterday) we are achieving Level Two,” he said.

Course instructor Gerd Nottelmann said the training went well, adding that he hoped that those in attendance would use their knowledge for the benefit of the sport in the country. “I’m happy to have conducted the course in Tanzania…the sport is developing, and through the training, I’m sure many swimmers would be persuaded to take up the sport,” he said.

The guest of honour was Registrar of Sports Clubs and Associations Rechal Khowoya, who urged coaches to go upcountry in search of budding talent.Khowoya, who is also the deputy sports director, said there were many young swimmers upcountry, who were being frustrated by lack of facilities.
