Huambo — The health services in central Huambo province recorded a drop in the rate of death caused by malaria in the first quarter of this year from 222 in 2010 to 58, as a result of new strategies in the fight against the disease.
The information was released Thursday by Huambo malaria programme official, Lelo Zola.
According to Lelo Zola, the drop of 164 cases is a positive sign and reflects the Government
effort in introducing various strategies of prevention and cure of the disease.
The new strategies include awareness campaigns, anti-larvae programmes, home spraying and distribution of insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets in the rural and urban communities.
Lelo Zola mentioned regular supply of medicines to health centres, upgrading of health and
laboratory personnel and quality testing as part of the new strategies.
Meanwhile, 32,203 cases of malaria were diagnosed in the province during the above
mentioned period, leading to the internment of 3,872 patients.
