Major Development Programs Implemented in Haikota Sub-Zone

Haikota — Major development programs have been implemented in Haikota sub-zone over the past 20 years, stated Mr. Hamdu Yosuf, Administrator of the sub-zone.

He told ERINA that the putting in place of agriculture infrastructure facilities including the construction of Fisko Dam, Hashekit and Balkai water diversion schemes through substantial investment helped to boost agricultural production.

Mr. Hamdu pointed out that the local inhabitants have become beneficiaries of reliable potable water supply, health, telephone and electricity services. He further stated that about 2,000 hectares have been put under cultivation on the part of 120 farmers of fruits and vegetables which is making due contribution towards ensuring food security.

Likewise, schools have been constructed in all administrative areas, besides the provision of adult and nomadic education programs.

The Administrator also indicated that a number of factories have been established such as the Bantom Factory, milk processing factory, animal feed plant and sponge factory are the outcome of the development drive since independence. He further explained that bridges were constructed around Gash, Alebu and Girasha rivers so as to alleviate transport problems.
