Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger confirms Jack Wilshere is in England Under-21 squad & deems decision a ‘massive risk’

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that Jack Wilshere has been named in the England Under-21 squad for the forthcoming European Championships.

The long-serving Gunners manager has repeatedly raised concerns over the well-being of the 19-year-old as he fears potential burn-out as a result of too much football at a young age.

The Frenchman does not believe boss Stuart Pearce has made the right decision by naming the youngster in his squad, which will be announced in full on Thursday afternoon, and claims his inclusion is a “massive risk”.

Wenger said: “I heard he has been picked. We just have to accept and respect the choice even if we think it is the wrong decision.”

He added: “Jack Wilshere is in the red for a while now and this can be a risk for his health.

“He will respect the decision. He knows that he is nearly at the end of his energy level but he is keen to do well.

“He has played nearly 50 games this year. To go to a tournament for me is a massive risk.

“I am happy if the under-21s do well because I want England to do very well.

“I think it is not the right decision but will respect it and let him go.”

Wenger has been joined in raising his concerns by Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, but the Scot’s worries appear to have eased as reports suggest Andy Carroll’s fitness problems may make him a doubt to be named in the squad.

The pair are both expected to keep their places in the senior set-up for the forthcoming qualifier against Switzerland, however, and Wilshere will then travel to Denmark for the Under-21 tournament, which begins on June 12.
