A team of South African mediators in the Zimbabwean political debacle hinted that there is serious progress by Zimbabwe’s parties towards agreement on a road map to fresh elections in that country.
A summit of the SADC troika on politics, defence and security recently condemned political violence in Zimbabwe that most observers blame on President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party.
Negotiators are also concerned about the succession law should Mugabe die or retire before the adoption of a new constitution, which is still being negotiated.
The SA mediators said, “As a matter of principle, the three parties have agreed sanctions must go, SADC has agreed the sanctions must go. But also… there must be understanding that the slower the pace (of implementing the GPA) goes, the more it becomes difficult to sell this idea.”
