West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has outlined his desire for a British manager with a knowledge of the East End to succeed Avram Grant.

Grant was sacked following the Hammers’ 3-2 defeat to Wigan on Sunday that saw them relegated from the Premier League.

Gus Poyet and Steve McClaren have moved quickly to rule themselves out of the running for the post and Sullivan, who is a co-owner of the club alongside David Gold, says they hope to appoint a new boss within a fortnight.

“We will wait to see who applies, we will wait to see what happens generally,” Sullivan was quoted as saying by The Independent.

“It will be resolved within I would think two weeks.

“I think we will definitely get a British manager, whether he is English, Scottish or Welsh makes no difference.

“We will get a home-grown manager.

“I think we do need someone who understands the culture and I think if we get someone with a knowledge of the East End that is so much better.”

Chris Hughton is currently many bookmakers’ favourite to replace Grant, while Dave Jones and Neil Warnock are also in the running should they leave their respective clubs.
