Awutu, May 18, GNA – Dr Adams Nuhu, Awutu Senya District Chief Executive (DCE), has called for concerted efforts to mitigate the effect of natural and man-made disasters in the District.

This, he said, was in line with the International Decade for Disaster Reduction.

Dr Nuhu made the call at Awutu during the inauguration of the District Disaster Management Committee, which is under his chairmanship.

He called for the application of appropriate technology in the building of houses to withstand earthquakes and other disasters.

Dr Nuhu advised against the obstruction of water ways with building structures, which he said led to flooding.

“Most disasters are preventable if we put in place mitigating measures, hence the importance of disaster management in our national life,” he stressed.

He said the Government would not relent on its efforts to support and provide logistics to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the management of all forms of disasters and other emergencies.

The DCE reminded members of the committee about the devastating effect of the floods that plagued Agona West, Agona East and the Awutu-Senya Districts, which displaced a number of people and destroyed millions of property.

Dr Nuhu said in the light of these, the District Assembly would continue to support the committee and its operations to reduce such incidents which retard development.

Mr David H Mensah, Central Regional Co-ordinator of NADMO in his key note address said the regional secretariat recorded more than 25,000 displaced flood victims last year.

He said 30 people lost their lives with property worth millions of Ghana cedis destroyed.

Mr Mensah said the District Management Committee would be assisted by a technical sub-committee to be headed by those in the field of disaster and prevention.

He said the District was prone to disasters and being a coastline lied directly within the epicenter zone liable to earthquakes, hence the need for the committee members to bring their expertise to bear on the work of the committee to achieve its goal.

Members of the committee are representatives from NADMO, Member of Parliament , Ghana Health Service, Information Service, Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service.
