Twelve students of Community Building and Design from The Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI) who are currently undergoing lectures at the University of The Gambia (UTG) recently presented their supervised projects to two external examiners at the GTTI annex in Banjul.
The programme is being conducted by GTTI through UTG. The two external examiners are assessing the projects and would determine whether the students meet the requirements to graduate or not.
In an interview with the Daily Observer, Bertha Johnson, head of Department of Programmes at the GTTI, explained that the programme was established between GTTI, Dajhousie University in Canada School of Architecture and Planning in partnership with UTG in 2007. She revealed that the programme was handed to GTTI and the UTG in 2010. She further revealed that the first batch was made up of 14 students under Dajhousie while the batch that is about to graduate is under UTG.
Johnson added: “The programme has four areas namely; humanities, practice, technology and design studio. At the end of the three-year programme, final year students are expected to do an individual supervised project which is examined by two external examiners.” According to her, the students were assessed by Gumbo Ali Touray, a veteran physical planner and Christina Marcy, the director of Architecture and Planning at Dajhousie University in Canada.
Madam Johnson further explained that the students presented projects on the cotton industry in The Gambia particularly in URR; Bachelor of Community Building and Design (BCBD) with a difference, homelessness in the Greater Banjul Area; factory of information (Libraries); skills training centre for Janjangbureh; entertainment centre at the Buffer Zone; mini-stadium in Lamin; local markets known as lumos in NBR particularly the Farafenni Lumo; improving local bakeries in Old Jeshwang; youth organisations; scout headquarters, ecotourism-cultural centre in Juffereh and redirecting pressure for Brikama market and other markets.
“I have hope for all the final year students, they are promising,” she added.
