Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp slams West Ham’s decision to host end-of-season dinner after wretched campaign

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has slammed West Ham United for organising an end-of-season dinner when battling relegation.

The Hammers’ party end in farce as police were called to break up a fight at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

Former boss Redknapp said that the decision to host the evening in the first place was a bad idea.

“I don’t know why you’d arrange an end-of-season dinner for a team that had a chance of getting relegated,” he told Sky Sports News.

“There’s been nothing but a bad atmosphere, the players are all on the floor. What they are having a celebration dinner for I don’t know.

“It’s like when I see a team doing a lap of honour after they’ve been relegated, you should get them off the pitch as quickly as possible. It’s nonsense.”

Redknapp also criticised the amount of blame that Avram Grant has received following his dismissal. The pair worked together at Portsmouth, and the Tottenham boss praised his former colleague for battling despite the team’s poor position in the table.

“”I’m sure Avram will come back. He’s a nice man, a good man. I think he had his hands tied behind his back for the first half of the season, it’s been difficult,” he continued.

“Once you down there relegation it’s difficult to get back up.

“It’s not the manager’s fault if people are not taking chances or letting silly goals in at the back, but you end up getting the blame.”

Redknapp also suggested that West Ham have to return to the Premier League next season, a feat which Newcastle managed when they were relegated two years ago, for the sake of their future.

He added: ”Next year is the key for me, they’ve got to get back next year.”
