Tanzania is this year expected to host the first conference of African electricity firms to discuss various matters on power generation and transmission including new technology of making repairs and maintenance without switching off power generation plants.
Speaking shortly before leaving to the US, the Managing Director of MacDonald Live Line Technology Limited, Mr Donald Mwakamele said the technology would help many power firms in Africa with huge losses due to switching off generation plants during repairs.
“We as stakeholders of the technology have recognized the importance of transmitting this technology throughout the continent in order to avoid such losses,” noted Mwakamele.
He further noted that as power demands skyrocket, it was important for African countries to apply the technology as in developed countries for the sake of rescuing the power firms from losses and customers from inconveniences.
“Frequent power interruptions is a normal thing in Africa but it is a rare case in developed countries because livelihood of people and operations of industries depend on such energy,” he stressed.
Mr Mwakamele, whose company offers such technology, said that the delegates would also have opportunity to visit his firm’s institute in Mvomero district, Morogoro region. The institute also offers training to electricity technicians on application of such technology.
He explained that preparations for the conference were on top gear and that he has been invited to the US by companies that manufacture equipment used in the application of the technology.
“Our colleagues in the US have agreed to co-operate with us and this is an opportunity for us to discuss and decide on how best to use the opportunity,” Mr Mwakamele said, adding that already some African countries have shown interest of learning the technology from his company.
In Africa, the technology is being used by MacDonald Live Line Technology Limited and South African companies only.
