Namibia’s top boxers will be involved in title fights in what should be an action-packed month of June.
Boxing promoter Nestor Sunshine Tobias said yesterday that apart from former WBA lightweight champion Paulus ‘The Hitman’ Moses, all his top-rated boxers will be in action next month.
Betuel ‘Tyson’ Uushona and Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda will flex their muscles in title bouts on June 11 at the Windhoek Country Club.
Uushona , who narrowly lost out on the Commonwealth welterweight belt in March, will vie for the WBA Pan Africa title over 12 rounds against Peter Owoch. Ambunda is set to defend his WBO bantamweight title against Norfat Emilio, also from Kenya.
Vikapita Meroro will get a chance to bounce back from his WBC International light-heavyweight title defeat against Isaac Chilemba two months ago when he takes on Ghanaian Brian Kamoko in Accra on June 25.
The loss to Chilemba meant that Meroro relinquished his WBO Africa title to Kamoko, who was the interim champion, and he now gets a chance to reclaim that belt.
Tobias said: “For Meroro it’s a great chance to get back to winning ways.”
Also in action is newly crowned WBO Interim Africa Super-Middleweight champion Wilberforce Shihepo, who accepted an offer to fight Martin Murray in a Commonwealth title bout of the same weight class.
“They approached us and we accepted,” said Tobias. “We are still waiting for them to come back to us.”
Flyweight Abmerk Shidjuu is also poised to go through the ropes with Luke Wilton in a non-title fight that could dent his Commonwealth title fight hopes.
“We have accepted the fight but we didn’t sign anything yet,” said Tobias. “Abmerk is the mandatory challenger for the Commonwealth title.”
