Futty is on the headlines again as he replicated his last Saturday night show header to get the Timbers an equalizer against rivals Seattle Sounders.
Very peculiar of a typical defender getting on the score sheet often in games consecutively, Danso did defy the odds.
The Gambian defender was the man of the night for the Timbers as he netted their lone goal in their victory against Philadelphia Union. Danso was on target on Sunday, scoring the equalizing goal away at the Qwest Field before a crowd of 36,593 supporters.
In the 52nd minute, Levesque triggered the play that led to the opening goal, lofting the ball forward to Fredy Montero. The Colombian out leapped two Portland Timbers to flick the ball on to Fernández, who had time to settle before lashing a left-footed shot inside Troy Perkins’ near post.
In their quest to beat Philadelphia, Jack Jewsbury lofted a free kick to Danso. The Gambian center back beat Keller to the ball to nod it into the net.
Eight of Portland’s 12 goals this season have come from set pieces.
Danso has scored the Timbers’ last two goals with his coconut, heading in free kick balls from Jack Jewsbury. Last week, Danso snapped one into Philadelphia’s net in a 1-0 victory at JELD-WEN Field.
On Saturday in the Seattle rain, he directed a ball past Kasey Keller for the equalizer in a 1-1 tie with the Sounders.
“I never had a doubt about my talent .The thing about soccer, it depends on who you get connected with. I happened to fall in with Portland last year and Gavin [Wilkinson, now Portland’s GM] gave me so much courage. He told me, ‘You can do this. You just have to believe in yourself.’ John Spencer came in and gave me the same [encouragement]” ,” Danso said in a post match interview.
“He’s always in the mix for it,” Timbers center back Eric Brunner said. “That’s the sign of a guy with a sense for the goal. He’s strong. He’s athletic. If you’ve seen him jump – he can touch the sky.”
