The residents of Okombahe were startled late at night by a loud rumbling – soon to learn that a five-metre-high wall of the 103-year-old Omkhaidani Evangelical Lutheran Church had collapsed.
“It was around 23h00 on April 26 when we heard a rumbling. People gathered outside to see what it was and that’s when we realised that the whole frontal face of the church was in ruins,” said Riana /Uises.
Except for the damage to the old clay building, not much extra damage was incurred by the collapse at the lobby end. Two pews were destroyed. No one was in the building during the incident.
According to /Uises, the church is still used.
“We are not sure what led to the collapse. It could have been because of the old material, or due to moisture from the rains. We will have a meeting with Bishop [Zephania] Kameeta this weekend to discuss the future of the church,” she said.
According to her, the church is considered a monument in the village although it has apparently not been registered as one.
