Former Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton is the new favourite to succeed axed Avram Grant at relegated West Ham United.

The former Republic of Ireland international is way out in front with the bookmakers after former favourite Steve McClaren pulled out of the running. Unibet prices Hughton @ 3.25 putting him well clear of Sam Allardyce @ 11.0.

Ex-England boss Steve McClaren was the red hot favourite @ 1.44 on Monday but is now out to 21.0 He ruled himself out of contention telling the press, “I do not wish to be considered for the position.”

Avram Grant was given his marching orders minutes after West Ham had blown a two goal lead against Wigan to lose 3-2 confirming their relegation. The club’s owners have since admitted that Grant was a bad choice and want a British manager to take over from the Israeli.

Hughton would be a popular choice with Hammers supporters due to his previous links with the club. After a long spell with Tottenham Hotspur he wound his career down at Upton Park enjoying a two year spell at West Ham in the early 90s.

He also guided Newcastle United back to the Premier League at the first attempt before being sacked last December. West Ham co-owner David Sullivan told the Sun, “We want a new manager that has a proven record of success.”

Martin O’Neill, who was widely linked with the post earlier this year, is 11.0 second favourite along with Sam Allardyce, Roberto di Matteo and Neil Warnock.

The club have indicated a quick appointment to plan their return to the English top flight.
