A Tamale circuit court has remanded all 16 persons who were arrested last weekend at Buipe in the Central Gonja district of the Northern Region.
The 16 were arrested following a renewed clash between the Jinapor and Lebu royal gates in which four people sustained various degrees of injuries while houses in the Chief Linguist of Buipe’s compound were also set ablaze.
The four have since been treated and discharged at the Buipe District clinic.
In an interview with the PRO of the Northern Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh told Adom News that the suspects will reappear before the court on the 26th of May, 2011.
He named some of the suspects that are in custody as Abdul Maiza Apor, oldest son of Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II adding that both members of the Jinapor and the Lebu gates were arrested in the swoop.
He said everything is calm in Buipe and life has returned to normal.
Though the cause of the renewed violence is yet to be established, sources say an attack on the driver of the Ghana Education Service (GES) who was among the victims attacked, might have sparked the conflict.
Chief Inspector Tetteh advised both royal families not to resort to violence, but channel their grievances to the appropriate quarters for solutions.
He said the townspeople should continue to cooperate with the security personnel and not take the law into their own hands.
The feuding Jinapor and Lebu Royal gates have been at each other’s throats over which of them has the right to be enskinned Buipewura.
