Steve McClaren rules out taking role as West Ham manager

Steve McClaren has ruled himself out of the running for the vacant managerial position at West Ham United.

The former England and Middlesbrough boss had been considered as one of the frontrunners for the job following the sacking of Avram Grant immediately after the Hammers’ relegation to the Premier League on Sunday, as they lost 3-2 to Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

But, in a statement to Sky Sports News, McClaren revealed he does not want to be in the frame for the Upton Park role.

“It is very flattering to be linked with a club of West Ham’s size and historic stature, also one that has tremendous fans,” he said.

“However, at this moment in time I do not wish to be considered for the position. But I wish everybody at West Ham all the very best for the future.”

McClaren has been without a job since he was sacked as manager of Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in February this year.

A former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, McClaren had previously guided FC Twente to a Dutch League title in 2010.

Chris Hughton and Sam Allardyce have also been linked to the position, with West Ham co-owner David Gold saying the club are eager to appoint a new manager as soon as possible.
