Mohamed Fofanah 13 May 2011 Freetown — In Sierra Leone's highly patriarchal society, where institutionalised gender inequalities are exacerbated by discriminatory customs, one group is singing it's way towards changing this. The Grassroots Empowerment for Self Reliance (GEMS), supported by the Governance and Transparency Fund of the UK Department for International Development, is working to change the present status quo and raise awareness around the proposed legislation to have 30 percent female representation in all levels of government, using radio jingles. (Sierra Leone's President, Ernest Bai Koroma, has said his government will work with the female parliamentary caucus to develop and table the bill before parliament.) It is working with the Mwananchi Project, which aims to involve citizens in governance

Barentu — The necessary preparations are nearing finalization to feature various programs, including carnival in Gash-Barka reigon on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Independence Day.

The chairman of the holidays coordinating committee in the region, Mr. Rezene Adonai, explained that carnival would be conducted highlighting the cultural and social lifestyle of the people, the history and heroism of nationals, as well as ancient relics and trenches.

Student shows and military parade would also be part of the carnival, and that the people are enhancing participation in the program, he elaborated.

Mr. Rezene further explained that Barentu, Agordat and Tessenei towns in particular are being decorated with neon lights and other materials symbolizing the significance of the great event.
