Nairobi — Twelve suspects escaped from police cells on Friday after two of them emptied a bucketful of human waste on the lone officer guarding them.
The 12 then overpowered the policeman at the reporting desk of Ukwala police station in Ugenya, beat him senseless, disarmed him and escaped.
The officer manning the desk was left writhing in pain and watched helplessly as the suspects escaped at 6am.
His human waste-drenched colleague did the best to wipe himself but smelt awfully.
Pathetic state
A source added that the police station cells were in a pathetic condition.
A police officer normally escorts the inmates about 400 metres from the cells to nearby latrines to empty their stool buckets.
“Our toilets are in pathetic state, hence the reason why the inmates are routinely escorted to the outside latrine to empty their stools,” added the source.
Siaya police chief Kariuki Ngugi said his men were on their way to Ukwala to track the escapees.
“I am on my way to the station. This incident has shocked the top security officers in the district,” he added.
Barely a month ago, an inmate escaped from the same station after dodging a drunk police officer who was escorting him to empty the night bucket in the morning.
The drunken officer was left sprawled on the ground, his rifle slung from his shoulder as the inmate escaped into the nearby thicket.
