The newly elected council of the Zambia Institute of Human Resource Management (ZIHRM) has vowed to conduct more intensive inspections in Zambia aimed at ensuring that human resource practitioners comply with the provisions of the law.
Re-elected ZIHRM president Namucana Musiwa said the new council would conduct more intensive inspections to ensure compliance by human resource practitioners to ZIHRM Act Number 11 of 1997.
Responding to a Press query in Livingstone at the weekend, Ms Musiwa said the ZIHRM Act required that all those practising human resource meet a particular level of qualification and be licensed.
She said the institute was aware that there were a number of practitioners practising human resource management illegally some of whom were Government employees.
Last week, Southern Province Minister Elijah Muchima expressed concern at the increasing number of un-licenced people who were practicing the human resource profession illegally in Zambia.
Mr Muchima said the issue of unlicensed people practicing the human resource profession was serious and a source of concern as it compromised the effectiveness and efficiency of the human resource profession in various organisations.
“We have embarked on an aggressive countrywide programme to conduct inspections and Southern Province is on the programme. Those human resource practitioners who are not yet registered with ZIHRM are called upon to normalise their status,” Ms Namucana said.
She said other plans for the new council were to increase membership level both in quality and quantity.
The membership of the institute increased from 1, 275 in April 2009 to 2, 090 as at April 30, 2011.
“We are planning to introduce continuous professional development for members and to introduce a modular organisation development training programme for heads of departments, chief executive officers and other professionals,” she said.
The new ZIHRM council plans to acquire land for the purpose of building a centre of excellence with a resource centre examinations centre, conference facilities and secretariat offices.
During the ZIHRM elections which were held on Friday evening at Zambezi Sun Hotel in Livingstone, Ms Musiwa was re-elected as Institute president while Kelvin Sokuni was elected as new vice president.
Justin Kangwa was retained as secretary while Andrew Chisala was elected as vice secretary of the Institute with Noah Chipoya elected as treasurer.
The position of vice treasurer went to Kennedy Njamba while Wilfred Siame and Joseph Mbolota were retained as councillors.
The results were announced at the closure of the 14th ZIHRM Annual General Conference at Zambezi Sun Hotel on Friday evening.
Earlier last week, ZIHRM in partnership with the African Federation of Human Resource Management Association hosted Zambia’s first ever regional human resource management summit at the same venue which attracted close to 200 delegates from Southern Africa.
The theme of the summit was Leadership Through People: Achieving Global Competitiveness Through Effective People Leadership and Leveraging on Regional Integration within Southern Africa.
