The Germany Ambassador to Uganda, Klaus Dieter Duxmann on Wednesday evening praised the Late John Akii Bua (RIP) as one of the greatest athletes this country has ever produced.
At a function where Duxmann was handing over modern timing equipment to the Uganda Athletics Federation UAF) held at Namboole Stadium, he advised the ambassador advised young athletes to emulate the Akii-Bua.
He won Gold in the 400m hurdles at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany. Currently, his family is fighting off eviction from the house in Kampala’s upscale suburb of Kololo given to Akii-Bua by the government of the time.
“I remember at the time l was 23 years old. I remember sitting behind my television to watch these runners. I got excited to see Akii-Bua in the race because I used to see him training in Germany. I felt privileged,” he said.
UAF received an electronic timing device worth Shs60m boost from the Germany government, under their sports co-operation. The gadgets came with a wind screen vane, start gun and camera.
“We thank the Germany government,” said Dominic Otuchet, the UAF president.
