Manchester City’s director of football Brian Marwood is adamant that the club will do everything possible to keep Carlos Tevez at Eastlands.

The Argentinean was the subject of much controversy after City rejected his request to leave earlier this season but Marwood is confident that recent events will change his mind.

City landed the FA Cup after defeating Stoke City 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday after also nailing a place in next season’s Champions League in midweek following a 1-0 win over Tottenham.

Marwood insists that the club now has what it takes to be a viable challenger to Manchester
United, who clinched a record 19th title a few hours before City’s Cup final win.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek programme: “We are working hard to keep Carlos Tevez, as we are with everybody.

“I just hope Carlos reflects on the season, reflects on yesterday, reflects on the fact we are going to be playing Champions League football and thinks ‘this is something I want to be part of’.

“That is up to Carlos to think through in the summer. You would like to think Manchester City is going to be an interesting place over the next few years.

“Carlos asked for a transfer in January and the club refused that. He is a massive player for us.

“He is our captain, he is our top goalscorer. Everyone can see that when he steps over that white line he gives everything.

“He came into the final yesterday having just recovered from a very nasty hamstring injury but once again showed great leadership qualities.

“We believe we can sustain a challenge not just on Manchester United but Arsenal, Liverpool, who will be much stronger next season and Spurs.

“They have a fantastic squad and will probably make one or two changes.

“I believe it is going to be a very exciting Premier League next season. We feel we are in a good position to compete.”
