Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy refused to take anything for granted after his side claimed their second 3-1 victory in a row against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

McCarthy’s side have now moved to 16th in the Premier League table but still only sit a solitary point above the relegation zone, and have a crucial home game against relegation rivals Blackburn to end the campaign.

But McCarthy can take heart from the fact that their destiny is now in their own hands, beat Blackburn and they will be safe.

“It’s the same three points as last week. I said it would go to May 22 and it’s going there, isn’t it?” McCarthy said.

“Nobody can do anything about it. Everybody has been in your earhole – the media, mums, dads, kids, friends. ‘If this happens’, ‘If that happens’.

“Just win our game. If we win our game, then nobody can do anything about it, and the same applies on Sunday against Blackburn.”

The victory came as a result of an impressive second half display, after ex-Sunderland player Jody Craddock had followed Wolves into the lead. Stephane Sessgnon equalised but goals from Steven Fletcher and George Elokobi sealed a crucial three points from Wolves, and McCarthy confessed he didn’t enjoy the game.

He said: “Not one little bit, no. I enjoyed the result. I enjoyed our second-half performance because we played well, but we had been battered for 45 minutes.”

“We got slapped and we had to certainly improve and up our game, which we did, and I think second half, we deserved to win, to be honest with you. I don’t think anyone could argue with that point.”
