West Ham co-owner David Gold: We need a miracle to survive

West Ham United co-owner David Gold has conceded his side will find it difficult to beat the drop this term.

Wins for both Blackpool and Wolves on Saturday puts the safety point mark at 39, which means West Ham require two wins from their final two games, as well as sides around them losing their remaining fixtures.

But Gold admits Avram Grant’s side have a huge task of avoiding relegation in their last two games.

“I am not confident we will stay up. We do need a small miracle,” he told Sky Sports.

“I am optimistic that we will do our very best to stay up. It is difficult as you can see.

“We need to win both of ours and hope that our competitors don’t win their two games.

“Is it possible? Yes. I think it is doable.

“We will set out to win our games and hope for the best, praying the worst doesn’t happen.”

Gold revealed his club have begun battening down the hatches in case of relegation in hopes of an immediate promotion next year, just as Newcastle United achieved after being relegated two seasons ago.

“We have budgeted for the worst. We have planned for the worst and hope for the best,” he said cautiously.

“We are confident that we put together a good squad in the event that we are relegated.

“We are not relegated yet, we have two games to go but I want to assure our fans so they know that in the event that the worst comes to the worst that we will do everything in our power to ensure we come straight back.”

The Hammers travel to fellow relegation-struggler Wigan Athletic Sunday in a crucial fixture for each club. The London side host a safe, injury-stricken Sunderland club on the season’s final matchday.
