Ryan Giggs has hit back at critics of Manchester United after the club sealed their 19th league title with a point against Blackburn Rovers.

The result at Ewood Park means Chelsea can no longer catch them in this year’s Premier League title race and Giggs had strong words for those who had written the Red Devils off earlier in the season.

He told Sky Sports: “We’re champions and we’re in the Champions League final, it’s a rubbish team.

“I mean, earlier on in the season we weren’t playing some great football, but at the turn of the year we were playing some great stuff and we deserve to be champions.”

The Welshman was also pleased to have overhauled great rivals Liverpool’s record for league titles, which was a distant dream when the veteran began his career at the club.

“If you look 20 years ago, we were nowhere near Liverpool,” he added.

“To overturn that deficit is a great credit to the club, to the manager and to the players who have been involved. So it’s great to be in front of our greatest rivals.

“That’s what you live for. This is why I’m still play at 37, for these moments. It gets better and better.”

Giggs will turn 38 later this year but despite his advancing years he has been influential for United once again this season and is currently ranked at No. 58 in the Castrol EDGE Rankings.
