Arsene Wenger warns Arsenal fans there is no guarantee of a top four finish next season

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has warned the club’s fans that a top four finish next season is not guaranteed highlighting the emergence of Tottenham and a Liverpool side that looks revitalised under Kenny Dalglish.

The Gunners have endured a somewhat disappointing season, failing to win a trophy once more though Wenger insists it will not be getting any easier to challenge for the top honours.

“People take it for granted that we are in there every year but, believe me, it is hard work,” Wenger said as reported by The Mirror.

“You have clubs like Liverpool who are out of it at present, and Tottenham were a big candidate this season.

“It is difficult to combine all the competitions and to be in the top four.

“It finishing in the top four is not enough, I agree. I work the whole year to win the championship. But, it is not guaranteed for anyone to be in there – not even Manchester United.

“They Manchester City will now be contenders, that is for sure. It will be easier for them to buy players now they are in the Champions League.

“You can see they will still have us, Manchester United – and Liverpool will come back. You cannot guarantee that. Chelsea will invest again – if I can believe what I see in the papers.”

Despite failing to win a trophy this season Wenger says the players’ cannot be faulted for their efforts both on and off the pitch.

“The players had a fantastic attitude for the whole season and I am frustrated because they have not been rewarded,” said Wenger.

“The players have produced every single effort they could on the pitch, but maybe we were a bit to nervous when we had to cross the line.

“We can still catch the second place and we can finish second, third or fourth, depending on our results.

“Of course we want to finish in the top three and, if possible, second.”
