Another Army General Decorated With New Rank

The president of the Republic and commander-in-chief of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh Thursday afternoon decorated Major General Sulayman Badgie with his new rank during a brief swearing in and piping ceremony held at State House in Banjul.

Badgie, who was promoted Wednesday from the rank of Brigadier General to Major General, also took six different oaths as required in the presence of Cabinet ministers, service chiefs and other senior government officials.

In a brief statement at the occasion, President Jammeh reminded the officers that the higher elevations are accompanied by higher responsibilities, urging them to be aware and teach themselves what is required of them and what is not. He assured that they will continue to promote the people that deserve to be promoted, while reiterating his advice for the service personnel to pursue academic development.

He reiterated that joining the army does not mean the end of education, but the beginning. The Gambian leader also pointed out the need for the promotion of the outstanding recruits in the Intake as a token of encouragement.

Speaking earlier, the minister of Works Construction and Infrastructure, Dr Njogu Bah commented on the strides made by President Jammeh in GAF, noting that the institution today has no reason not to be loyal. He urged the officers to remain committed to their work, be loyal, take their responsibilities with seriousness, and above all live up to expectations.

The Attorney General and minister of Justice, Edward Gomez expressed similar sentiments. The chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of GAF, Lt. Gen Masanneh Kinteh thanked the president for approving the promotions, noting that Major General Badgie’s decoration is the 3rd of its kind in less than a month. He also noted that the president will always reward those that work with diligence, loyalty and commitment, while extolling the professionalism of major General Badgie.

Permanent Secretary Harry Sanbou chaired the occasion.
