FORMER Zambia soccer team central defender and MTN Division One North Mufulira Wanderers head coach Harrison “Wawa” Chongo has died.
Chongo, 41, died yesterday afternoon at Ronald Ross Hospital in Mufulira where he was rushed and admitted on Wednesday after suffering from high blood pressure during a week nine league match against visiting Prison Leopards at Shinde Stadium.
Wanderers secretary Japhet Sekwila confirmed Chongo’s death in an interview yesterday saying funeral is at the parents’ house number 25 Section 8P, Kantanshi township behind Shinde Stadium. Burial arrangements of Chongo, who leaves behind a wife, Patricia and six children, will be announced later.
Chongo was a key member of the national team that was reconstituted after the death of the entire squad, technical staff, officials and Zambia Air Force crew that perished off the coast of Gabon on April 28, 1993.
He was part of the national team squad that reached the final in the 1994 African Nations Cup in Tunisia when he was playing for Wanderers before he secured a contract at Saudi premiership side Al Taawon.
