Heurelho Gomes will be Tottenham Hotspur’s number one in goal next season, according to boss Harry Redknapp.

Gomes has come in for repeated criticism after spilling Frank Lampard’s shot against Chelsea which was given as a goal despite not crossing the line and for gifting Blackpool a penalty moments after saving one from Charlie Adam.

The recent errors are reminiscent of Gomes’ first months at Spurs when he was mocked by opposition supporters for his goalkeeping errors, although since Redknapp’s arrival his form had noticeably improved.

He was replaced by Carlo Cudicini in Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat at Manchester City, although this was because of a back injury.

And Redknapp has insisted that the Brazilian will still be his first choice goalkeeper next season, despite his drop in form.

“Yes, he will be my number one,” he told reporters.

“Carlo Cudicini played well the other night but Gomes will still be here. He’s a top-class keeper.”

Tottenham go into Sunday’s trip against Liverpool knowing a defeat will mean a sixth placed finish and no European football next season.

The North Londerners have injury concerns with the news that William Gallas, who signed for free during the summer, will miss the rest of the season, but are boosted by the long-awaited return of Ledley King, who has made only seven appearances for the club this season after suffering a severe groin injury and could start at Anfield.

On his defensive worries, Redknapp added: “William Gallas isn’t fit. He’s probably out for the season. He did a calf the other night at Man City.”

“Ledley could play. He played in a game on Wednesday and came through okay. He’s not trained today but if he feels okay he could be available.

“Ledley’s a fantastic player but Michael Dawson and William Gallas have been fantastic, so we’ve been okay in defence.
