According to the Deputy Minister, what the Bimbilla MP said was simply an insult to all Ghanaians. “He thought he was dealing with the President but it has turned out he has insulted all Ghanaians.” He said. Mr. Nitiwul on Monday amazed Ghanaians with a claim that President Mills charmed Ghanaians with a ring to enable him to win the 2008 elections. The MP said that it was people within the NDC who told him that but he was unable to mention names.
Mr. Ablakwa, who was speaking in an interview with The Enquirer in reaction to the Mr. Nitiwul’s assertion, said that the MP’s position was clear to the effect that a mere ring could sway the minds of Ghanaians to vote for a candidate instead of assessing the person’s competence. “It’s quite amazing for a Member of Parliament to think like that in this modern time,” he said.
According to him, Mr. Nitiwul has demonstrated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not have any modicum of respect for the Ghanaians electorate who voted for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr. Ablakwa said that the position of the MP implies that the NPP was more interested in Black Magic and Vodoo politics than talking about issues. “Not long ago, Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, General Secretary of the NPP, also came out to say that it did not rain in Kumasi during the Easter Friday because God was angry with the NDC as government in power,” he said.
“No serious opposition party will make such unhealthy and unguarded statement that insults the very people it is trying to persuade to vote in its favor,” he said.
He told The Enquirer that Ghanaians voted for President Mills because of his vision and integrity. “The man’s credibility, track record and the solid plans he had for Ghana at the time he was candidate Mills alone made Ghanaians to vote for him,” he said.
The Deputy Minister said that with Mr. Nitiwul’s position, the NPP is saying Ghanaians are cheap and not discerning enough and just a ring could let them have a change of mind. “This is where some politicians have gotten to and that will not help Ghanaians in any way at all,” he said.“The way Nitiwul spoke has been the trend of the NPP but what is worse is that they will go all out and defend it but Ghanaians are watching closely,” he added.
He told The Enquirer that several months after the election of Nana Akufo-Addo, as the flagbearer of the NPP, the Party does not even have a blueprint for his campaign.
“I expect the NPP to be talking about such things and not the disgraceful and cheap statements like the ones coming from Messrs Afriyie and Nitiwul,” he said.
He said that Ghanaians had the opportunity to listen to both NDC and NPP and saw that NDC would increase housing stock, provide quality education and offer the best and voted for it. Mr. Ablakwa said it would serve the NPP good to do scientific-based politics and stop the Black Magic politics.
