DAILY GUIDE can confirm that about 50 macho men stormed the premises of the District Assembly block with a mission to prevent some 16 assembly members from entering the main hall to participate in an election meant to endorse the DCE who has been nominated by President Mills.
Reports say that over 100 police personnel who were at the place to ensure law and order were rendered helpless as the macho men, believed to have been hired by some NDC officials, allegedly displayed their utter disrespect for the law and human rights. They allegedly manhandled the assembly members as they violently pushed them to the ground in their quest to prevent them from entering the assembly hall to vote.
Eyewitnesses told Daily Guide that a section of the assembly members had to flee for their lives as the macho men purportedly pulled knives and other offensive implements and attempted to harm them should they dare to enter the room.
The move, they explained, was to get rid of the 16 members suspected to be sympathizers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) so as to have a one-sided house to endorse the DCE. Following the commotion, the Electoral Commission (EC) had to postpone the elections to save life and property.
The Asunafo South District Electoral Officer, Dorcas Crentsil, hinted that the election had to be cancelled but declined to give details of their decision. She however directed DAILY GUIDE to her regional boss for details.
However, George Gyabaah, the Regional EC Director, could not be reached for comments.
Bonsu Isaac Carter, an assemblyman, confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE and said he and his colleagues had to run for their lives from the scene after commotion broke out when the macho men tried to prevent them from going inside the hall to cast their votes.
He expressed disgust about how business at the assembly had been turned into machoism in recent times as a similar incident happened last Wednesday when macho men assaulted some of them, who fell unconscious and had to be rushed to the hospital, during the same exercise.
The Asunafo South District has been a trouble spot in the Brong Ahafo Region in the past few years due to the parochial interest of certain political figures from the area who want to pursue their political agenda by foul or fair means.
They employ the youth and sometimes macho men outside the district to visit violence on their political opponents so as to achieve their agenda.
The district, after the dismissal of the former DCE, Fleance Danso early this year, has been without a substantive chief executive since two consecutive elections to endorse the nomination of the new DCE had been cancelled due to violence that were visited on some assembly members perceived to be sympathizers of the NPP.
