BHP Billiton-Liberia Marathon Promises New Future

For the very first time Liberians across the nation will have the opportunity to witness a world-class racing event that promises to deliver a new future to the Liberian society.

The BHP Billiton-Liberia Marathon, which will get underway on August 28, 2011,  is expected to rally several thousand Liberians from every spectrum of the Liberian society.

Organizers say the marathon will begin from the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex and proceed up to Paynesville Red-Light, down Somalia Drive through the Freeport of Monrovia and down to Vai Town.

Thence, organizers say, the race will continue across the Gabriel Tucker’s Bridge by way of Ashmun Street up to the Cathedral High School, and onto Broad Street. It would then continue by way of Roberts’ Street and down to Carey Streets, onto Newport Street, through Sekou Toure Avenue behind the BTC onward to former Budget Bureau. It will continue through the Executive Mansion Route onto Tubman Boulevard, through the SD Cooper Road and end at the SKD Sport Complex.

The BHP Billiton Liberia Marathon, according the official launch speaker, Monrovia City Mayor Mary Broh, is likely to raise huge financial dividend for the city and the government.

“Marathons across the world,” she reportedly said, “always create opportunity for investment. As such, the continuation of the BHP Billiton-Liberia Marathon will set the stage for open doors for Liberia in the subregion.”

Madam  Broh then called on every Liberian and interested foreign friends residing in the country to form part of the BHP Billiton-Liberia Marathon, which is also intended to straighten ongoing peace efforts among Liberians.

In remarks, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Marbue Richards, called on government employees to form part of the BHP Billiton-Liberia Marathon to boost the event, which is taking place for the first time in Liberia.

He said Liberians needed to embrace the event because it would set the stage for advancing peace in postwar Liberia.

The head of BHP Billiton-Liberia Marathon’s media and public relations, Wanneh A. Dixon, told reporters that BHP Billiton-Liberia Marathon has set aside US $3,000.00 as the grand prize.

She said registration began officially last Saturday at the Monrovia City Hall and would continue at all Ecobanks facilities in Monrovia and around the country.
