Gianfranco Zola’s mooted return to Stamford Bridge has been reflected in the betting markets. William Hill have halved the odds on the former Blues favourite becoming the next Chelsea boss from 20/1 (21.0) to 11.0 (10/1).
Owner Roman Abramovich is determined to make some changes at the club with boss Carlo Ancelotti expected to depart for Roma. He’s 1.61 to be in charge of his current club on the first day of next compared to 2.20 against.
Only twice in Abramovich’s tenure have the club finished the season without a trophy and on each occasion the manager was sacked. Claudio Ranieri was given the boot in 2003/04 despite finishing second and reaching the Champions League semi-finals. Avram Grant was also given his marching orders in 2008 after coming agonisingly close to winning the Champions League.
Zola was a fans favourite during his seven years at Chelsea and departed a hero just before Abramovich’s takeover in 2003. He has been out of work since losing his job at West Ham a year ago and it’s understood Abramovich wants him to work as an assistant coach to his new managerial appointment.
Guus Hiddink remains the bookmakers preferred choice to return to the club where he lifted the FA Cup in 2009. Fellow ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is 3.75 with his old assistant Andre Villas Boas @ 9.0.
