Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing has been called up to Stuart Pearce’s provisional England Under-21 squad for this summer’s European Championship.

The 22-year-old received has impressed for his club after filling in for injured captain Steven Gerrard, and takes a spot after Bolton’s Mark Davies was forced to withdraw due to injury, missing out on the tournament in Denmark.

Pearce is due to submit his team to Uefa this Thursday and it is the Reds midfielder’s first time that he will be involved in the squad.

Spearing has made 18 appearances under a revived Liverpool side and will join team-mate Andy Carroll, who is also in the provisional squad which will be cut down to 23 names in June.

Club manager Kenny Dalglish has shown faith in the youngster, who has been an integral part of the midfield that has helped the Reds to push for a Europa League place.

The midfielder is allowed to play at the under-21 championship because he was 21 when qualification began.
