The Western Regional Coordinator of the Expanded Programme of Immunization, Mr. Peter Ofori Tweneboah says the budget for this year’s child immunization exercise has seen a massive increase because of the presence of Ivorian refugees in Ghana who also have to be immunised.
According to Mr Tweneboah, the budget has shot up because there is a high demand for vaccines and logistics because of the increased numbers.
The program which is currently ongoing has had to be extended to the Ivorian Asylum seekers at the Ampain refugee camp in the Western Region.
Speaking to on the second round of the National Immunization exercise which covers Polio, administration of Vitamin A and de-worming, Mr Tweneboah told Adom News the Directorate has had to employ more hands to embark on the exercise as the numbers are overwhelming.
He said apart from the budgetary constraints, the language barrier also remains a major challenge for the volunteers as many of them cannot speak the language of the Iviorian refugees and vice versa.
He was however hopeful that the exercise will be successful.
