Aston Villa defender Luke Young: The players are being left in the dark over Gerard Houllier’s situation

Luke Young has revealed that the players feel left in the dark over managerial situation at Aston Villa, after confirmation that Gerard Houllier will not be taking charge of the club’s last two matches of the season.

The Frenchman has not been in charge of the team for their last three games after suffering heart problems in April, prompting recollections of a surgery he had to undergo during his time with Liverpool.

Houllier’s number two, Gary McAllister, has been in temporary control of the team and will continue through to the season’s end, but this arrangement has not helped the players in terms of managerial consistency.

“It is going to be another summer of no-one knowing what’s really going on for a while,” Young told reporters.

“I would hope the manager, first and foremost, is healthy and he comes through the trouble he has been having with his heart.

“But I think also we need to know what we are doing, who is going to be taking the club forward, who is going to be making the decision on which players stay and go and who is going to be in charge for next season.

“Hopefully Gerard is fine and he can carry on but at the minute, let’s be honest, no-one really knows what is going on.”

One particular problem with the club’s current situation concerning players is the decision making process surrounding the possibility of players coming in and others leaving.

Ashley Young and Stewart Downing have both been heavily linked with transfers away from Villa Park in the summer, whilst Nigel Reo-Coker and Brad Friedel have contracts expiring at the end of June.

He added: “We’ve discussed it ourselves as players, wondering who is going to be making the decisions about who to keep and sell.

“No-one knows, again.”
