At a press briefing on Wednesday May 11, Mr Vanderpuije laughed off calls for his resignation, pointing out that the President is the only person who has the mandate to ask him to resign from his position.
According to him, he is committed to keeping the streets of Accra clean and would ensure that the hawkers never return to the streets.
The Market Women Association of Ghana, (MAWAG) say over 15,000 street hawkers in the metropolis have been rendered jobless through the AMA’s eviction exercise.
The Group, which claims to speak for market women and hawkers in Accra, says it will sue the Accra Metropolitan Assembly for human rights abuses against its members. It has also given the Accra Mayor an eight day ultimatum to resign his post or face their wrath.
However, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the AMA says the claims by the hawkers are unfounded. Numo Blafoe III questioned the group’s size, telling Citi News “I don’t how this group came about with the number 15,000 members; it is ridiculous.
“If they say our task force personnel are harassing them sexually I will confidently say that it is false. This allegation came up some time ago and we organized an identification parade for the lady who made the allegation to come and identify the personnel who solicited sex in exchange of her wares and nobody showed up.
“I don’t know why people would embark on such a big lie to denigrate someone who has done so much in making sure that people’s lives are bettered in our society”.
