Santos’ Ganso ruled out for six weeks with thigh injury

Brazilian powerhouse Santos has received some disappointing news from the treatment table in the aftermath of its scoreless draw against Corinthians in the Sao Paulo state finals at the weekend.

Highly rated playmaker Ganso sustained a muscular problem during the match and was forced to leave the pitch in the first-half.

Subsequent tests carried out on Monday confirmed a prognosis worse than first hoped, and the number 10 will face six weeks on the sidelines due to a muscle injury in his right leg.

Santos doctor Rodrigo Zogaib confirmed the severity of the injury in a press conference held Monday morning.

“It was a traumatic injury caused by the movement he made in that particular play. He was unbalanced with his right knee on the ground and he tried to shoot with his left foot. At that time the right thigh muscle contracted, which caused the injury,” the medic explained.

The young midfielder will miss at least six weeks, which would put him in doubt for the Copa Libertadores final should the Peixe make that stage. The club’s next test is the quarterfinal against Cruzeiro’s vanquishers Once Caldas, with the first-leg this Wednesday in Colombia.

Ganso has continually been linked with a move to Europe, with Serie A champions AC Milan closely monitoring his situation at Santos.
