On-loan Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz is keen to extend his stay at Ewood Park at the end of the season by making his move permanent.

The Paraguayan returned to Rovers in January, 18 months after he left the club to join Manchester City for a £17.5 million fee.

The 29-year-old’s career at Eastlands was hampered by injuries, as he made only made 24 appearances for the club – and just eight starts.

But now he is hoping a permanent return to Ewood Park will reignite his career.

“The loan ends this summer and I need to see how it goes, but once I finish here I will need to go back to City,” Santa Cruz told reporters.

“Everyone knows that I am very happy at Blackburn, I have a lot of friends.

“I have enjoyed my time here so it would be a great thing for me if I could stay but it is up to the club and City so we need to see what will happen.

Since moving to Rovers, the forward has continued to be troubled by injuries, and is still to score on his return to the club.

The former Bayern Munich man, however, admits he is looking for regular football, and concedes it is unlikely that it will be at City.

“As a player you expect and want to play and of course when you come to my age you want to enjoy the last bit of football that you have left,” Santa Cruz added.

“I don’t want to spend the rest of my career not playing. So that is the main consideration for me.”
