Patronal service for Awo today

THE 24th remembrance thanksgiving service for Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the first Premier of the defunct Western Region,

holds today.

Chief Awolowo was born on March 6, 1909 to the family of the late Chief David Sopolu Awolowo, in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State. He died on May 9, 1987.

To mark the patronal day, a thanksgiving service will be held at the Obafemi Awolowo Memorial Anglican Church, Ikenne-Remo, at 10.00 a.m, where political disciples, associates and friends of the family will celebrate with Awo’s Jewel of Inestimable Value, Chief (Mrs) HID Awolowo and the entire clan.

A notable lawyer and eminent statesman, Chief Awolowo’s name became synonymous with achievements, excellence and fulfilment, just as he was described as one of the world’s pillars of education, courtesy of his free education programme in 1955.

Even in death, Chief Awolowo is still being reverred for his welfarist and masses-focused programmes through which he wrote his name in gold.

At the event last year, an Anglican cleric chided the today’s political class in the country as consisting of devilish and anti-masses politicians, whose moral lives were nothing to reckon with.

The cleric also lamented that most of the self-acclaimed disciples of Chief Awolowo were no longer following the ideals and philosophy of the founder of the defunct Action Group (AG) and Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).
