Dr. Spio-Garbrah, who contested the flagbearer position with President Mills in 2006, is reported to be nursing ambitions of running against Mills again but this time with Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings as a third force to contend with.
According to the Statesman newspaper, Dr. Spio-Garbrah may soon resign his lucrative post in London and pick up his presidential nomination forms for the July contest. Deadline for picking of nomination forms is Tuesday May 10.
Reacting to media reports of his intended move on Joy FM, the former Education and Communications minister declined to confirm or deny the reports but indicated that he would be releasing a statement soon which would outline his position on the reports.
“It would be a statement regarding the upcoming July NDC congress. Of course as you can imagine, many people have called me from all over the world and all over Ghana asking what my position is, what my intentions are, what do I plan to do.
“ All those are I’m sure very valid questions and very valid points and I suppose it is because I was a candidate in the 2006 congress and people just assume that once I’ve shown interest in the leadership of the NDC and the leadership of Ghana then if there’s any kind of contest, it’s as if you are a Rafael Nadal or you’re a Roger Federer or a well known 100 meters dash athlete and there’s going to be a major Olympic competition and people just want to know: are you going to be taking part or not, I think it’s a fair question”.
The NDC will elect a flagbearer at a national delegates congress in Sunyani from July 8-10, 2011. So far, only President Mills and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings have picked up nomination forms. If she submits the forms and contests, it will be the first time a sitting president has been challenged by a member of his party for the flagbearership going into an election.
