The Peoples Democratic Party in Borno State is heading for the Election Petitions Tribunal to challenge the outcome of the April 26, 2011 governorship elections.
The party is also contesting the results of three federal constituencies which the ruling All Nigeria Peoples Party won.
The PDP is contesting the outcome of the polls in these areas based on allegations of massive rigging, voter intimidation, thuggery, harassment, assault, ballot box snatching, multiple thump-printing, ballot stuffing and murder.
Director-General of the Goni Campaign Organisation, Alhaji Mohammed Kumalia, announced this at a press conference, in Abuja, on Sunday.
He noted that the people of the state trooped out in their numbers to vote in spite of two bomb blasts and the fatal shooting of the Shani Local Government Chairman of the PDP, Mallam Idris Imam.
Kumalia said a testimony to the acceptability of the PDP in the state was the fact that it rose from “ground zero” to win two out of the three Senatorial seats, including the seat contested by the incumbent governor.
Speaking on specific cases of electoral offences, he said, “In Bama, 12 booklets of 100 ballot papers each were discovered at the Government lodge in the morning of the election day 26th April 2011.
“The DPO in Bama arrested the culprits and the exhibits are presently in his custody. A top member of the State Executive Council was arrested with substantial ballot papers in his custody.
“In Ngala Local Government Area, the home local government of the incumbent governor, a convoy of over ten vehicles loaded with fully armed thugs shooting and scaring people were going from one polling station to another.”
