The event known as ‘Art in Da House’ was hosted by Dr and Mrs Jhalil Tafawa Balewa and founded by Meekam K. Mgbenwelu.
In a speech, Mgbenwelu informed that the seventh edition of the exhibition tagged ‘People as the Centrepiece’, was meant to celebrate the resilience, style and rich cultural heritage of Nigerians.
He said with 70 percent of Nigerians living on $2 a day or less, the art exhibition will serve as a reminder that people must be the priority as well as the centre of governance.
The founder assured that art continues to be a powerful tool for creativity, expression and change that Nigerians and friends of Nigeria look forward to, adding that ‘Art in da House’ offers opportunity to engage accomplished as well as budding artists as they send forth a message.
“For one day, a home is turned into an art gallery and you have Art n da House! From its modest beginning in Jabi in 2005, the event has travelled to several homes in Abuja and now returns to Jabi for the seventh edition,” he declared.
Speaking at the event, Dr Jhalil Tafawa Balewa, said the idea of the exhibition was to make art accessible to Nigerians and her foreign friends in order to encourage up coming artists.
One of the sculptors whose works were displayed, George Idahosa, said his work has to do with the unknown as well as health issues.
Falodun Oluwafemi, a photographer whose works was also displayed, said his work goes beyond the normal studio shots as he turns his pictures into decorative ones. “My photograph is not the common ones you see around because I take time to study before creating beauty out of pictures,” he added.
