Ryan Giggs and Nemanja Vidic keen for Manchester United to wrap up the Premier League against Blackburn

Ryan Giggs insists Manchester United will now seek to wrap up the Premier League title as soon as possible after all but securing the honour thanks to goals from Javier Hernandez and Nemanja Vidic in a 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

United flew out of the traps when Javier Hernandez slotted past Cech on 36 seconds after good work from the brilliant pairing of Giggs and Ji-Sung Park and the Welshman is adamant his side will seek to secure the solitary point needed for Premier League glory at Blackburn next Saturday lunchtime.

On the cusp of his 12th Premier League winners’ medal, Giggs told Sky Sports: “We will try and get it done as soon as possible. It’s a tough place to go but I’m sure we will have a lot of fans going to that one, it will be a great atmosphere as it always is and we won’t go for the draw, we will try and win.

“It’s a massive step forward, mathematically it’s still not done yet but were nearly there so weve just got to finish the job off. Hopefully next week.”

United took control of their title dreams in a first-half in which Nemanja Vidic added to Hernandez’ opener and Giggs was pleased with the fact his teammates kept up a relentless tempo after the Mexicans blink-of-the –eye strike.

Quizzed on whether he could believe the goal in the first minute, Giggs said: “It’s a great start.  It would have been quite easy for us to take our foot off the pedal but I don’t think we did that and like I say, we knew that we needed more than one goal and it was great to see Vida’s (Nemanja Vidic) second goal go in.”

The Serbians header mid-way through the first-half came as a result of wide play which looked like flash back from Giggs’ early career and Vidic was quick to point out the consistent quality his teammate delivers.

Vidic said: “I think about 70 percent of the goals from corner kicks I score from Ryan’s delivery and today, he did it again. 

“Obviously it’s great for me, great for the team today.  Like Ryan said, mathematically it’s still not finished but hopefully next two games we can take one point, or three, or six and win the league.

“We knew we had to go for the win today, obviously we know that Chelsea are very good in possession and they keep attacking like they did in the second-half but I think we did well, we defended properly, like a team and in the end I think we deserved this win.”

Ferguson’s men looked set to endure a nervy twenty minutes when Frank Lampard prodded home a Bradislav Ivanovic knock down but the Chelsea siege failed to materialise and United now stand within touching distance of a nineteenth league title – surpassing the 18 won by rivals Liverpool.  An achievement Giggs is more than aware of.

“Fifteen or twenty years ago you’d have never thought it so it’s a great achievement by the team and the manager to haul back our biggest rivals over the seventies, eighties and nineties,” added 37-year-old Giggs.

United will achieve such a feat if they pick up one point against Blackburn or Blackpool or if Chelsea fail to pick up maximum points in their remaining two fixtures.
