Blackpool captain Charlie Adam insists the horror tackle which left Tottenham winger Gareth Bale in need of crutches after Saturday’s draw was not intentional.

The Scot caught Bale’s left ankle just after the hour mark at White Hart Lane, a challenge which forced the PFA Player of the Year off on a stretcher and will result in a scan on Monday.

A goal scorer later on in the game which ended 1-1, Adam escaped the incident without caution and protested his innocence afterwards. He told Eurosport: “I just saw the ball and tried to get it. It was never intentional.”

The Scotland international visited Bale in the changing rooms after the game in order to apologise and later spoke glowingly of the Welshman’s ability.

“I never tried to hurt him because he’s a wonderful player and at the end of the day I’d rather see these players on the pitch,” added Adam.

After an incredible start to the campaign, Bale was thwarted by injury throughout February and could now be set to miss Tottenham’s remaining fixtures against Liverpool and Birmingham, pending the results of a scan.
