Kofi Adams, Deputy General Secretary of the ruling NDC and Spokesperson for ex-president Rawlings, who revealed this, however said there have not been any reasons assigned for the apparent snub of Nana Konadu’s campaign launch.
Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings on Wednesday, May 4, officially launched her bid to contest the NDC’s flagbearership race by declaring that she ‘represents the future’ of the party. By that ‘bold’ decision, the former First Lady waltzed her way into the history books by being the first woman to challenge a sitting president for the flagbearership position of a party; just a term into the administration of the incumbent.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show, Kofi Adams said the Konadu campaign team will go ahead with their campaign with or without the support of the executives.
‘We invited every single national executive member and we sent invitation cards plus text messages so if they decided not to come, you can’t force them. They choose to stay away and that is their right. We will communicate with the party executives but whether they (National Executives) are available or not, we will go on with our campaign because the campaign is basically run at the party’s grass root,’ he noted.
According to him, Nana Konadu’s campaign launch has erased every doubt from the minds of those who thought she wasn’t too keen on contesting or perhaps she was bluffing.
‘Launching the campaign was further testimony to the rank and file of the party and the country at large that Nana Konadu is ready and prepared to take over the challenge of holding the flag of NDC to become the first female president. The campaign has answered many questions, as to whether she was going to contest or not and we were delighted by the number of people who turned up to support her…from picking of the nomination forms to the launching; it indicates people’s acceptance,’ he added.
Asked if in the event of a Nana Konadu defeat the former President will campaign for Professor Mills, Kofi Adams said for now, Mr Rawlings has no campaign message that can sell President Mills to Ghanaians. He likened the call to dispense with the services of the learned professor as the NDC’s flagbearer to a football striker who has lost his potency up-front. He explained that every good strategist who wants to win games will not allow a once-potent striker who has suddenly become profligate in front of goal to stay on the pitch, whiles there is an equally good marksman on the sidelines; knowing very well that the striker’s continuous presence on the field of play will not bode well for the team.
‘I don’t know if Rawlings will campaign for Mills if he wins but he has already indicated that he doesn’t know the message he will base hi campaign on, so he needs to be convinced. When a football team has a potent striker…but this time he (striker) is so wasteful in front of goal, but there are other equally good strikers on the bench, will you allow the goal-shy striker to still be on the pitch simply because he was so potent in previous matches? If you are a good strategist, you will use your equally good strikers on the bench to give hope to the supporters and the people,’ he asserted.
But in a quick rebuttal, National Organiser of the NDC, Mr Yaw Boateng Gyan, sarcastically asked whether it would be a prudent decision to replace Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan with a striker from the Black Queens team just because Gyan (Asamoah) was being wasteful up-front.
He contended that it is unnecessary for the party to change its leader, adding that those who believe the NDC needs a new leader are delusional because their position does not represent that of the delegates who will vote at the party’s Congress to choose a leader in July.
