The Hon. Minister was giving his comments on the launch of former first Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings’ campaign.
The former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings on Wednesday, May 4, officially launched her bid to contest the National Democratic Congress’ flagbearership race by declaring that she “represents the future” of the party.
According to him, it is unfortunate for an incumbent President to be contested by members of his own party. However, “we should allow things to have its course until the congress so that the delegates will choose for themselves. We didn’t want to get to this level but looking at the way things are going, I think we should allow things to have its course.”
Speaking in an interview with Suhini Alhassan on Radio Gold’s newspaper review, Hon. Fifi Kwetey continued to declare his unflinching support for President Mills. He said his support for President Mills does not mean he disrespect the former President Jerry John Rawlings. According to him, the former President has asked them to be bold to stand by their principles and what they believe in and that is what he is doing.
“I will back President Mills with no disregard to the founder of the party. He has told us to be bold and stand by our principles and that is what I am doing. I call on the supporters of President Atta Mills to come out of their coils and clearly declare their intention to support the government. It’s a positive defiance; the people must be bold to back President Mills without being afraid however, it does not mean disrespect or disloyal,” he added.
He reiterated that he has the right to disagree with the founder of the party and he is not doing that because of the fact that he has been given a government appointment. He said he would have supported President Mills even if he didn’t have any position or an appointment as a minister; “I cannot say that because I don’t have a position, I will keep quiet. Before I was given the position, I disagreed with him (former President Rawlings) when he proposed that Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu should be the running mate for the then candidate Mills. I made it clear where I stood because I believe if you have a father and he is going wrong, you should be able to tell him without fear.
When I believe in something no matter what I stand by it.”
